Selmer Paris Reference 54 Alto Saxophone, Excellent 1 owner saxophone
Excellent condition, Selmer Reference 54 Alto Saxophone. This horn shows very light use as the photos show. The pads are all in like new condition. The saxophone has been cleaned, disinfected, regulated and oiled to make sure its ready to go for years to come. Its currently setup for a fluid light touch and is open regulated for intonation and projection. The horn plays effortlessly top to bottom. The saxophone finish remains excellent condition. The only minor blemish I noticed on the body is a 1/2 inch lacquer scratch at the curve on the transition into the bell tube.

I did my best to capture this faint issue in the bell photo. This saxophone has a fat powerful sound with very good intonation. It has a medium style bow similar to the medium bow first introduced in 1958 on Mark VIs for 1 year and then the medium bow was brought back in 1965 and ran though the end of mark VI production. Selmer describes the reference 54 model as.

Inspired by the Mark VI model released in 1954, the Selmer Paris 72F Reference 54 alto is a professional saxophone that integrates the Mark VI's legendary acoustic characteristics with innovative modern key work and better intonation. A major favorite among jazz saxophonists, the Reference 54 alto saxophone offers a rich throaty sound that even "barks" well in the lower register. The keywork of the Selmer 72F alto saxophone is extremely fluid and reacts well to even the most difficult passages. Complete with shaped flight case.

Join the legions of jazz saxophonists that have rediscovered the sound of the legendary Mark VI and have made the Selmer 72F Reference 54 alto saxophone their horn of choice. The Reference 54 alto takes its inspiration from a 1958 mid-70,000 serial number Mark VI. It plays, feels, and looks like a vintage Selmer, including longer bell to improve intonation and a vintage matte finish.

I played this saxophone against a 1958 Mark VI Alto 75XXX. The main difference I could hear was the Ref 54 had slightly more power and was a bit more of a punch focused horn. The finish on the horn is named dark gold lacquer.

Its a dark and rich look. The serial number 655xxx indicates it likely in the initial one or two Reference 54 lots sent from Paris to the US.

The finish on these early reference 54s is slightly darker than the current dark gold lacquer production. The item "Selmer Paris Reference 54 Alto Saxophone, Excellent 1 owner saxophone" is in sale since Monday, March 1, 2021.
