It is a French made, professional level version. Most people associate the Vito name with student level instruments, and most of them are. "Vito", however, is not a model per se, but rather a brand name, which has been applied to many different models over a span of more than half a century. The various saxophones that have displayed the Vito name come from factories in at least four different countries (USA, France, Japan, and Taiwan), and vary in quality from fairly low level student horns to very good pro level instruments.
This one comes from the Beaugnier factory in France, which Leblanc had acquired (I believe in the 1960's). This horn has absolutely nothing in common with the USA or Asian made horns, except the name on the bell.
Please note that it is stamped "MADE IN FRANCE" on the bell (see picture #4). The serial number is 23, xxx.
This horn is in overall very good physical condition, however it has taken a few knocks in its day. The bottom of the bow is flattened slightly, as seen in the pictures. Additionally, there are some minor pings on the side of the bow, and one key guard foot that is pushed in ever so slightly. The body is straight though, and the neck is not pulled down or otherwise damaged. I don't see any signs of past dent repair or re-soldered joints. The original lacquer is 90+% intact, with most of the wear on the neck. There is scratching throughout, but all in all this horn looks very good, especially with the detailed full bell/bow engraving. The keys are all operating smoothly, and display minimal mechanical wear. See the product in action. This horn is currently in good playing condition on older pads, as you can hear in the demo video linked above. I won't say that it is in 100% perfect adjustment, but it is actually sealing up quite well with minimal finger pressure. That being said, it is overdue for a re-pad. The pads are quite old, and showing their age.
This is a fine horn that is definitely deserving of an overhaul, so I would advise going that route sooner rather than later. You will, however, be able to play it straight out of the box, if for no other reason than to get a sense of its potential, and you probably could get another year or two out of the existing pads if you wanted to. This sax comes in a newer plastic shell case. The zipper is functional, but doesn't move along quite as easily as I'd like. It is clean and odor free inside. There is no mouthpiece, nor any other accessories included with this sax.
These French made Vito's are very highly regarded, with many considering them excellent'sleeper' horns. That is to say that they are very good value for the price. This is a great chance to get a quality, pro level, instrument at student level pricing!
